This 6x8" giclée print features the Queen of Diamonds playing card from Caelestes, a deck inspired by medieval interpretations of time and space.
The Queen of Diamonds is Capricorn’s card, featuring an illustration of a celestial hand retrieving bread from flames for winter’s feasts.
In the Caelestes deck, each of the court cards correspond to an astrological sign, which is determined by the card’s value for modality (fixed, cardinal, mutable) and the card’s suit for its element (water, earth, fire, air). Queens are cardinal modality, occurring in the beginning of their seasons. Diamonds correspond to the tarot suit pentacles, which in turn represents the element of earth.
Thus, the Queen of Diamonds is our Capricorn card - the earth sign occurring early-winter. The illustrations on each court card take inspiration from documented Medieval labors of their respective seasons, creating a calendar.
