This 6x8" giclée print features the King of Spades playing card from Caelestes, a deck inspired by medieval interpretations of time and space.
The King of Spades is Gemini’s card, featuring an illustration of a celestial hand in a falconry glove, summoning a hawk to land.
In the Caelestes deck, each of the court cards correspond to an astrological sign, which is determined by the card’s value for modality (fixed, cardinal, mutable) and the card’s suit for its element (water, earth, fire, air). Kings are mutable modality, occurring at the end of their seasons. Spades correspond to the tarot suit swords, which in turn represents the element of air.
Thus, the King of Spades is our Gemini card - the air sign occurring late-spring. The illustrations on each court card take inspiration from documented Medieval labors of their respective seasons, creating a calendar.
